| (14.08.'07)GUI
Survey:
The GUI are conducting a survey at present to
get the views of club committees in relation to
a proposal to "star" the handicaps of
players who do not play regularly in qualifying
competitions. They suggest that a minimum of 3/4
qualifying competitions should be played in a
given year at a member's home club. If not, the
member's handicap is "starred". This
means the handicap holds for social golf but the
member has to reapply for a handicap to play in
qualifying competitions. |

|
|
| (07.08.'07)Senior
Cup :
The venue for the Senior Cup was the revamped
Fota Island Golf Resort and the first match was
against Bandon on Saturday morning. It was a typical
game of two halves with Bandon gaining the advantage
in the first half. Hopes were dimming after eight
holes with Bandon in the ascendancy in practically
all matches. However, the second nine was quite
a different story with our side coming to grips
with the strong Bandon team and we gained two
matches to two losses; the game of Keith Crowley
proved to be the most crucial with one down and
one hole to play. This 18th hole of the new course
is the more familiar 9th of the old course; the
downhill dogleg left-to-right with the greenside
bunker to the left and out-of-bounds close to
the back of the green. Keith was first to play
from a drive in the rough on the right side of
the fairway and he landed a beautiful nine iron
to approx 10 feet. Bandon replied with an equally
fine shot resulting in a downhill putt from an
equal distance. Bandon just missed the putt and
Keith got his birdie; the match going down to
the 19th all square. Keith hit the green in two
as did Bandon who got to putt first and left it
short with a difficult cross-green putt to finish
with. Keith putted uphill to the hole and was
given the lagged putt. Bandon failed to finish
in four and Lee Valley were declared the winners.
Cobh GC just pipped Mahon GC on the other side
of the draw and we played Cobh team in the late
wet and cold evening. Our team proved much too
strong for Cobh and thankfully the games ended
early in second nine of all matches (there was
a suggestion that if the fixture had not come
to a conclusion before the onset of darkness that
the games would recommence early on Sunday morning).
Fota GC were the opponents for the next leg of
the competition. We won two matches (Niall Gorey
and John O'Neill) and lost two (Keith Crowley
and Sean Barry) and the final match went to the
18th with Fota one up. Pat Power did all that
could be expected by gaining a fighting par but
Fota responded with a spectacular shot from the
greenside bunker for a tap-in par to win the overall
by 3/2.
Captain Martin Hackett was loud in his praise
of the team players, panel, caddies and team manager
President Phil Cooney for the manner in which
they prepared for this prestigious event and took
the opportunity of wishing every success to the
team members who are competing in the Munster
Semi-Finals of the Barton Shield next month.

|
| (18.07.'07)Junior
West Cork:
LV overcame Kinsale on Sat evening thanks to
a 19th hole win by James Murray against the odds.
His opponent was less than 3 feet away for birdie
and James had a 20 footer for the same. Somehow
James holed his putt and his opponent missed resulting
in a win for LV.
The home team, Bandon, saw us off on Sun morning
in a tight match. There was still everything to
play for with a few holes to go but the game slipped
away from us with excellent short game play from
the Bandon team.
Thanks to all the panel for the effort they put
in this year and also to all the supporters who
showed up over the weekend.

| (13.07.'07)Junior
West Cork:
Despite the burden of a 4 - 1 away defeat at
Lisselan, Lee Valley made a gallent effort to
retrieve the contest at home last night. First
out were Liam Buckley & John Dynan who were
3 down after 13. They then proceeded to win the
remaining 5 holes for a two up victory. Next out
were Stephen Collins & an in-form Declan Ryan
who also won on the 18th. Eugene Murphy &
Stephen Marsh were leading on the 18th when word
came through that David O'Sullivan & Paul
McMahon had been defeated. As Paddy O'Shea &
Eric O'Neill were one down playing the last Lissselan
were declared victorious.
I wish to apologise to a member of the team for
unfavourable comments in a previous report. His
partner Eric said that "for a change he made
a contribution on this occasion". |

| (02.01.'07)Local
Rule - Fourball
The Local Rule for playing in a fourball in the
event of a partner not turning up has been changed.
If the situation arises that a playing partner
does not turn up for a fourball competition and
the other playing partnership is present, then
the player without a partner joins up with the
higher handicapper of the playing partnership
present; two cards are returned, with the higher
handicapper acting as a partner on both cards.

| (02.01.'07)Golf
Insurance
While the club does have an insurance policy
it is only of limited use for members who suffer
or cause injury on the golf course. It is geared
in the main towards the public liabilities of
the club and in the area of covering members who
are representing the club in competition. It is
strongly advised that members take out insurance
to cover themselves in the event of causing or
receiving injury while playing golf; GolfSure
is a policy that proves popular with golfers and
costs a modest sum.
