Christy O’Connor Jnr is a legend in Irish golfer. He is known as “Junior” because he is the nephew of another leading Irish golfer Christy O’Connor Snr.
O’Connor was born in Galway and turned professional in 1967. The European Tour officially began in 1972, and O’Connor made the top hundred on the Order of Merit in each of its first twenty-one seasons, with a best ranking of seventh in 1975. He has won four European Tour events. As a senior he has competed on both the European Seniors Tour and the U.S. based Champions Tour, and has won two Senior British Open titles and two Champions Tour events.
O’Connor played in the Ryder Cup twice. In 1975 he was a member of a losing Great Britain & Ireland team and in 1989 he was part of a European team which tied the match to retain the trophy. His personal record was one win, three loses and no ties. His win over Fred Couples was best remembered for a stunning 2 iron shot on the last hole at The Belfry which he left just 4 feet from the hole.
Lee Valley Golf & Country Club was designed by Ryder Cup Legend Christy O’Connor Jnr and calls the spectacular setting of Lee Valley in County Cork its home. The facility was officially opened by Christy and former US Masters Champion Fred Couples in 1993.
This Cork golf course is unique in design – with a Parklands-type setting that demands the skills required to complete a Links course because of ever-changing local wind conditions. The course affords the higher handicapper an enjoyable day’s golf while offering a stern test to anyone looking to break par. Water is a prime feature on seven holes and the greens are arguably the best in Cork.
The first hole, from a raised tee, highlights the majestic views and surroundings more than any other on the course. The par 72, 6700-yard layout packs a real punch so it’s important not to get too distracted by the scenery, and correct club selection and ball placement are paramount.
